Autoduel Returns: Car Wars Arenas

I’m a bit of a fan of the Mad Max series. And the old video games Road Blasters and Spy Hunter. And all sorts of other things that involve cars with lots of weapons on them.

Back in the 80s, Steve Jackson Games decided to capitalize on that sort of fandom and put out a game called Car Wars. It’s been kind of popular ever since.

I picked up my first Car Wars game back in 1998, just as my time at college was closing out. Because of that, I’ve only been able to play a couple of times and those were just kind of ad hoc skirmishes. No real chance to ever do a regular campaign where I’d make use of the advancement rules.

That didn’t stop me from backing the new Car Wars Arena project when it came up on Kickstarter. It showed up in the mail today… and it rocks.

Here’s a vlog with all the physical stuff that came with that. Now I just need people to play with.

Unboxing Blood Rage

So many games with miniatures coming my way… this is the first one: Blood Rage.

Of course, you don’t get a good look at most of the minis… I’d need a completely different setup for that. And they’re probably best illustrated by stills, anyway. (Maybe still just like what they did on the Kickstarter page.) They are very nice minis, at least compared to what I’m used to in a number of other board games I’ve played over the years. They’re plastic, with enough flexibility to not break and enough hardness to hold their shape and feel good and solid.

I bought into this game because I totally dig the style–the art and the sculpts and the general plot are all fantastic. Since it’s a 60-90 minute game, I may even be able to drag it to Game Night and get people to play it. Or, y’know, hold my own game day again. Either way, it doesn’t seem prohibitively complex rules-wise. (I’ll know more when I do get around to playing it.)

I’ve seen some pics online of painted versions of these Vikings, gods, and monsters and it really tempts me to try to dress them up a little. Over the past few months, I’ve watched a few painting tutorials online (because I have so many games with so many minis coming my way) and I’m not sure I have the patience for it. Guess we’ll see as time goes on. (It’s not like I have any shortage of friends who know more about painting than I do…)

So, yeah, Blood Rage, it showed up on time, looks awesome, and I own it (and all the expansion stuff) now. Cool.

Here’s the vlog where you can get a quick look at things.

Comics in a Box Every Month

A couple of weeks ago, I subscribed to the Comic Bento service. They’re kind of like Loot Crate and a number of other services that ship out a box full of stuff to their subscribers once a month.

In this case, as you may have guessed from the name, it’s comic books.

I picked Comic Bento because it’s the only one I’ve come across so far that, when checking out past shipments, I saw absolutely nothing that made me think “Well, that would just get put away in a corner until I finally threw it out or re-gifted it to someone.” Seriously, there are some Loot Crates I’ve seen where there was nothing that interested me.

But Comic Bento… well… they’re comic books. I’ve never really gone all that wrong in the past with comics. Even the “bad” ones have some redeeming quality… even if it is just inspiration to “do better than that.”

In today’s vlog, I open that first box. I’m pretty happy with what I found.

(Also, upon slightly closer reading, I’ve realized that  Executive Assistant Iris is from the team that did Witchblade… which I do actually own some issues of from back in the day and I also enjoyed the short-lived, Yancy Butler fronted, TV series. I just didn’t recognize the names when I saw them.)
