About Kier

I've been on the web since about 1994. I have a background in a lot of things, including a five year stint as a journalist and over a decade of helping people get their message out to the world. I write on a number of subjects--everything from relationships to personal development to politics and every day life. I hope you get something worthwhile out of it.

Different Goals, Different Tactics

When I set out to do this 100 day challenge of producing a vlog a day, the only real goal was to create.

Once upon a time, I had intentions of doing a lot more with both blogs and vlogs. While ramping up for that (aborted) plan, I did a lot of reading and research about how to make those things actually work. And by “work” I mean “make enough money to live off of.”

There are a lot of sometimes conflicting bits of advice out there when it comes to such things. Three or four entire industries focus on different aspects of the problem of profitability. Some eschew the idea of profitability completely and tell you to look elsewhere to make a living (they’re generally wrong… and trying to sell you something else).

Vlogging and blogging are key tools in today’s marketplace. Video content (of all types) is a huge asset to any company or campaign. Heck, television has been big business for well over two generations now… if that doesn’t speak to the power (and profitability) of video content, I don’t know what would. (Maybe the YouTubers pulling in six figures in advertising share?)

I’m not marketing this vlog. It’s nowhere near polished or focused enough to warrant the effort that would need to go into making it an earner in any way.

But if you want the only advice that matters for making something successful, here it is:

  1. Create Awesome Stuff
  2. Talk about the Awesome Stuff you’ve created
  3. Keep other people talking about your Awesome Stuff

It is that simple.

Not that any of that is easy, mind you… but it is that simple.

So, regardless of what you want out of it the first step is always creating something. It likely won’t be awesome at first. That’s okay. Just get used to it. Get into the habit of doing something. Then make it awesome.

And then, eventually, you can maybe make a living doing it.

If that’s what you want.

Listen to me ramble on about such things in today’s vlog.

A Fine Time to be A Fan

It’s been a heck of a week.

Out in the world at large there’ve been some pretty nasty things that have gone on. On a more personal level, technology has been conspiring against me and people I know all week… and the weather has been distinctly unseasonable (especially for those of us from the North).

But, there have also been some really cool things that have gone on. New trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Warcraft that you should really check out. Lots of neat scifi and fantasy things on the horizon.

It’s the kind of week where I’m left in awe of what people–including people I know–create on a regular basis. Things that wouldn’t have been possible just a decade or two ago (let alone when I was a kid).

So, in today’s vlog, I kind of ramble a bit about all of that.

Tomorrow, I dive back into the actual blogging world a little when I finally run the first new meeting of the long-dormant DC Bloggers Meetup group. Going to meet a bunch of new, likely young, and spunky writer-types. Should be fun.

A Groovy Return to the Evil Dead

There have been a lot of shows this season that are based on movie franchises.

A lot of them, in a word, suck.

They either don’t follow through well with what was set up in the film or they follow through on the weakest aspects of the movie.

Ash vs The Evil Dead is not one of those shows.

If you were a fan of Army of Darkness, you’ll pretty quickly recognize this show’s pedigree.

The only “problem” is: I’m not going to be able to (legally) watch it.

See, it’s on Starz, a cable channel. Since I don’t have cable (for anything other than broadband service… and only then because I really don’t have a choice), so I don’t have Starz. And Starz  doesn’t have a stand alone service like Showtime and HBO do. They also don’t generally put their stuff up on Amazon like AMC does (which is how I watch The Walking Dead). That all means I’m going to have to wait until this show comes out on Netflix in order to see it.

But, from what was in the pilot episode, that’ll be well worth the wait.

And it’s already been picked up for a second season.

Check out my not-quite-fanboy squeeing about it in today’s vlog.

Supergirl Done Right

This show got off to a late season start, but it appears to have been worth the wait.

I don’t watch many shows on CBS. Mostly because I can’t do so easily. But I’d been looking forward to Supergirl, it’s another DC Comics property and I’ve found it very interesting to see how the different ones play out on the various networks they’re on (and in the movies).

This time around, we’ve got a “House of El” family member who feels a lot more like classic Superman than Man of Steel did. That alone makes it worth checking out if you can. I’ll likely make the effort to check out the second episode (which dropped this past Monday) on the CBS website.

Mostly, I’m kind of bummed that we won’t get to see Supergirl interact with Arrow or the Flash… or Superman. It’s pretty obvious that this show isn’t set in the same universe as Man of Steel and cross-network cross-overs really don’t happen often enough to count on it.

Check out my ramblings on the whole thing.

Comic Bento: Masks

Comics! Another month another Comic Bento box. This time it’s got a theme of “Masks” so it’s all about people with secret identities.

Of course, I still haven’t finished reading last month’s shipment–October just got too busy with Halloween and the vlog and everything.

Here’s hoping that I’ll be able to tear through this month’s comics, because they’re a pretty awesome bunch that includes a couple that I’ve been meaning to pick up for a while now.

Next month’s theme is “Button Mash,” which means I’m expecting some video game tie-ins. Being as out of the loop as I am, I have no idea what that could include. Exciting.

I also got another thing to unbox today: my Remix Mini. A full-fledged Android-based desktop PC setup. I wasn’t expecting it to show up today… and I had talked myself out of heading out on Sunday to pick up a new monitor and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The demo I had planned really didn’t go well with the setup I ended up having to work with. Especially with my Internet connection acting up. It may be another few days before I can really pull that together.

Anyway, check out my vlog to see what’s in the bento box of comics.
